Lake Albert, Meningie, South Aaustralia

 Lake Albert

A few weeks ago we booked a week's holiday in Meningie on Lake Albert, hoping to get some sunny days by the lake.  However, the week we were there it rained on and off every day and in fact we had some days and nights of really high winds and extremely cold nights.  We wanted to have some time for reading and painting (for me) so we certainly had plenty of time for that, but we did manage to go on a couple of nice drives in between the rain storms and also got to have a campfire so that was a highlight for us as it's not a camping trip unless we can have a campfire and toast some marshmallows.

Lake Albert is a freshwater lake which is filled by water flowing into it from Lake Alexandrina near the mouth of the Murray River.  Lake Albert is also known by its Ngarrindjeri name, Yarli.

We didn't see as many birds on the lake as we have seen on other trips here, probably because it was too cold and wet for them too.

Here are some photos of the birds we were able to photograph.

Tolmer Rocks

Tolmer Rocks are about a half hour drive from Meningie.  They are quite spectacular and we enjoyed the drive out there and had a good look around.  The largest rock is about 130 metres high and there are quite a few other granite outcrops in the very picturesque picnic area.

One afternoon when the wind was not blowing and we even had some nice sunshine we managed to have a campfire which was great as we do love a campfire.

Our  safe campfire is one Ron made from an old gas bottle

And of course I managed to get some lovely sunsets too and storm clouds.

Although the weather was very cold and windy, we still had a great week away and the benefit of bad weather is not many people in the caravan park or in the cafe's and restaurants which we enjoyed on a few days.  It was so good to get away and enjoy nature and our wonderful countryside.

Bye for now!

You certainly were able to get some beautiful shots, the scenery is lovely as are those colours in the sky. My husband isn't a good person for campfires where as I really love them, hence we don't have them when we travel about unless our eldest son takes his family and van along too...

Thanks Margaret, I understand your husband and campfires as sometimes they are a bit smokey, but I do enjoy them when the conditions are good. When our grandsons were small we had to watch them very carefully as they loved the flames and I was in constant "alert" mode when they were around the fire, luckily no accidents and they are teenagers now and have outgrown their campfire addiction!
