Cooktown Memories - 2DAY 25-26 - Winton to Cloncurry

Winton continued

DAY 25
Banjo Patterson statue at the Waltzing Matilda Centre
On our last day in Winton we walked around the town and discovered  much more than we were expecting.

Sadly, there was a fire in Winton in 2015 and the
Waltzing Matilda Centre was destroyed and
I think this statue was also destroyed.

The Centre has now been rebuilt and from photos I have found it looks to be bigger and better than before.

Ron with "Banjo" Patterson
Winton is a town dedicated to the life of Banjo
Patterson, who wrote Waltzing Matilda in 1894 and it was first performed in Winton.

Time for a drink

The Musical Fence was commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival and Winton Shire Council and built in 2003.  Most of the drum kit was sourced from the local tip.

Arno's Wall

Arno's wall is 2 metres high and about 70 metres long.  It contains almost every household item embedded in the wall and is a very interesting piece of art.  Arno was born in Germany in 1930 and migrated to Australia around 1960 and came to Wintn to find opals.

Leaving Winton and the Jump Ups (mesa)
We reluctantly left Winton and headed off to Cloncurry, passing through Kynuna and McKinlay before arriving in Cloncurry, distance of about 350 km.

Main Street in Kynuna
Ant Hills and Mitchell Grass

We arrived in Cloncurry and found the Oasis Caravan Park and were given a site with a little bit of shade which happened to be in the little back yard of a permanent cabin/caravan.  We felt a bit embarrassed at being so close to the owner of the cabin who came out as we were setting up, but she said not to worry as it was ok with her, and I really think she enjoyed the company as I had a nice chat to her.

Next day it was time to do the laundry again and afterwards I had a Nanna Nap as according to my diary my leg was aching ( Knee Replacement was only in Feb. 2013).  We went out for tea at the Cloncurry Motel/Hotel.

On the road to Normanton

After 2 nights in Cloncurry to catch up on housework etc. we headed for Normanton about 380 km.

Overnight stop out of Normanton

We stopped overnight at a bush camp about 60 km south of Normanton and arrived the next day in Normanton and booked into the Normanton Caravan Park.
