Cooktown Memories from 2013

On the Road from Lightning Ridge to Charleville

After several days in Lightning Ridge we packed up the van and headed off again.  My diary says the weather was warm and sunny. And   the weather was great - a big improvement from our first day.
Our next stop was the small town of Hebel and a sign on the side of the road said "Devonshire Tea" so we stopped  as it seemed a good idea and it was morning tea time.
Yes, I did share with Ron

Huge scones - more than a meal

We were certainly full after getting through this morning tea and I don't think we needed lunch!
We left Hebel and drove through Dirranbandi on the Castlereagh Highway to St. George, a distance of approximately 300 km.  We found the camping area in Surat on the Balonne River, a nice area with a few spaces left for us to set up for an overnight stop.

After leaving our overnight stop in Surat, we headed for Roma, about 80 km. then on to Muckadilla where we stopped for lunch near the old railway station.

Roma Bush Gardens
We had a nice walk around the bush gardens in Roma and then
back on the road to Muckadilla.

Old Muckadilla Railway Station
After leaving Muckadilla we drove on to Mitchell where we stayed at the Neil Turner Weir.

After two enjoyable days camping by the weir, we headed off again and our next stop was Morven where we had a look around the Museum.

It was a great little Museum and the price was even better, at just $1.00 entrance.  Morven has a population of 250.

Back on the road we came across some cattle being driven south.

Charleville
Our next stop was Charleville where we stayed for a few nights.
